BIO
Erik Paul Howard is a lens-based artist and cultural organizer born and raised in Southwest Detroit. Howard’s work serves as a comprehensive visual index of his communities’ traditions, culture and history. For Howard, photography and video are tools of imagination building and expanding cultural capital, forging a future that prioritizes generational wisdom, mutual aid and justice.
Howard’s creative work is deeply rooted in his two decades of social practice as co-founder of Inside Southwest Detroit, The Alley Project, and Expressions—a network of initiatives practicing justice through place, storytelling, and cultural organizing.
PRESS + RECOGNITION
Erik’s work has been featured in exhibitions, national publications, and community-based storytelling initiatives. His photography and documentary work have received recognition for their ability to preserve and amplify underrepresented narratives and features in Lowrider Magazine, the Venice Biennale, Photoville NYC, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.
Additionally his work has appeared in New York Times Op-Docs, Outlier Media, the Detroit Free Press, Detroit Metro Times, MLB, and on WDET, NBC, NPR and PBS as well as at the Arc en Rêve Centre d'Architecture Bordeaux, the Henry Ford Museum, and PhotoVille NYC.
