BIO

Erik Paul Howard is a lens-based artist and cultural organizer born and raised in Southwest Detroit. Howard’s work serves
as a comprehensive visual index of his community’s traditions, culture and history. For Howard, photography and video are tools for building and expanding cultural capital and forging a future that prioritizes generational wisdom, mutual aid and justice.

Howard’s creative work is deeply rooted in his two decades of social practice as co-founder of Inside Southwest Detroit, The Alley Project, and Expressions—a network of initiatives practicing justice through place, storytelling, and cultural organizing.

His work has appeared in Lowrider Magazine, New York Times Op-Docs, the Detroit Free Press, Detroit Metro Times, MLB, and on WDET, NBC, NPR and PBS as well as at the Venice Biennale, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Arc en Rêve Centre d'Architecture Bordeaux, the Henry Ford Museum, and PhotoVille NYC.
